We have teamed up with Peak Performance Training to develop a 12 week exercise program designed specifically for the rigors of hiking the Grand Canyon.

Weeks 1-4 Foundation Phase
Weeks 5-8 Strength Phase
Weeks 9-12 Endurance Phase

This program is designed for healthy people who already obtain some level of physical ability. If you have any concerns that this program is right for your level of ability, contact your physician before you begin your training.

Grand Canyon Attractions, Parks, & National Monuments

Canyon de Chelly National Monument – (928) 674-5508  Located east of Flagstaff, take Interstate 40 to exit 333 on US 190 which you will follow the rest of the way. Canyon de Chelly is one of the longest continuously inhabited areas of North America. There you will find dwellings, cliff art and other artifacts. While visiting you can drive on auto tours, hike (some hikes need permits), go on guided tours and sight see. This is a long day trip.

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area – (928) 608-6200  Located north of Flagstaff take US 89 north for about 130 miles. This is a massive recreation area with what seems like endless recreation opportunities. While at Glen Canyon you can hike, boat, swim, take a tour of the Glen Canyon Damn, or just relax on the shore of the lake. This is a great day trip up to several days.

Grand Canyon Caverns – (928) 422-3223  Located about 100 miles west of Flagstaff, take Interstate 40 west to the Seligman/Route 66 exit. Continue on Route 66 all the way to the caverns. Once there you will a well preserved 210 foot deep cavern. Tours of the cavern are offered daily. This is a one day trip or a side trip out to the Grand Canyon Skywalk.

Grand Canyon Skywalk – 1-877-716-9378  Located west of Flagstaff, take Interstate 40 west to exit 48. North on US 93 for 29 miles. Turn east at the Dolan Springs/Meadview City sign onto Pierce Ferry Rd/Hwy 25. Follow Pierce Ferry Rd for 29 miles, then make a hard right onto Diamond Bar Rd/Hwy 261 for 21 miles. Diamond Bar Road will end at the only entrance to Grand Canyon West.

Hoover Dam Located north and west of Flagstaff, take Interstate 40 west to US 95 north. Tours of the dam are offered daily as well as a visitor center to get more information.

Homolovi Ruins State Park – (928) 289-4106  Located east of Flagstaff, take Interstate 40 to exit 257 then take Highway 87 north for one and a half miles. Located at the park are Pueblo Indian ruins and artifacts. At the park you can sight see, go to the visitor center and great camping.

Jerome, Arizona Located 75 miles southwest of Flagstaff, take Interstate 17 south to exit 287 and from there take AZ 260 to AZ 89 ALT. Jerome was established 1876 and is now know as a well preserved ghost town. While there you can shop, get information on the area and mining and sight see. This is a half day trip.

Lees Ferry Located on the way to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, take US 89 just over 100 miles to US 89A. On this road travel about 15 miles to the Lees Ferry turn off, finally travel this six mile side road to lees ferry. The areas is well known for its fishing and beautiful scenery. This is a great side trip while traveling to or from the north rim.

Lowell Observatory – (928) 233-3211  Located in Flagstaff on top of Mars Hill. This is the observatory where Pluto was discovered. At the observatory you can view exhibits, go on day and night tours, attend evening programs, and look through their telescopes. This is a few hour trip.

Meteor Crater – (928) 289-5898  Located 35 miles east of Flagstaff, take Interstate 40 east to exit 233. Meter Crater is an approximately 50 thousand year old impact site. The crater is over 500 feet deep and more than 4 thousand feet across. Located on site is a great interactive visitor center and daily guided tours. This is a half day trip.

Montezuma Castle National Monument and Montezuma Well – (928) 567-3322  Located about and hour south of Flagstaff, take Interstate 17 south to exit 283. Montezuma Castle boasts that they have the best maintained and preserved cliff dwellings in North America. While visiting you can go on a guided tour or view the dwellings on your own. Then at the well you can hike around enjoying scenery and history. This is a great day trip.

Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park – (435) 727-5870  Located 190 miles north of Flagstaff in Utah on the Arizona border. To drive there, take US 89 to US 160 to US 163 as you cross into Utah. There are many sandstone towers or monuments spread throughout the park. Popular activities are off road driving, driving tours, hiking and sightseeing. This is a perfect overnight trip from Northern Arizona.

North Rim-Grand Canyon National Park – (928) 638-7888  Around 200 miles from both Flagstaff and Grand Canyon South Rim, the north side of Grand Canyon National Park is a must see. To get there take US 89 north just over 100 miles to US 89A. US 89A will take you to Jacob Lake where you will make your final turn on Route 67 which takes you to the north rim entrance station. This is a two or more day trip.

Petrified Forest National Park – (928) 524-6228  Located 110 miles from Flagstaff, take Interstate 40 to exit 311 and then drive 19 more miles on US 180 to get the parks south entrance. Petrified Forest has one of the world’s largest concentration of petrified wood. While at the park you can drive to different view points, visit the visitor center and take a short walk. This is a long day trip.

San Francisco Peaks Located directly next to Flagstaff, these mountains offer outstanding recreation. To access many of the hikes either take US 180 or US 89 from Flagstaff. The tallest of the peaks is Mt. Humphreys at 12,670 feet, Arizona’s highest point. The trail up Mt. Humphreys starts at the Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort.

Sedona/Oak Creek Canyon Sedona is located 30 miles south of Flagstaff. To get there take US 89A which will take you through Oak Creek Canyon. In the canyon you can camp, swim, hike, visit Slide Rock State Park and have a picnic. Once you arrive is Sedona there is shopping, hiking, sightseeing and Red Rock State Park to visit.

Sunset Crater National Monument – (928) 526-3367  Located north of Flagstaff, take US 89 north for approximately 14 miles to the signed turn off. Established in 1930, Sunset Crater is an old volcano that forever changed the landscape around it. While at the Monument you can visit the visitor center, take hike or attend various interpretive talks. This is a half to full day trip that can be linked with Wupatki National Monument.

Walnut Canyon National Monument – (928) 526-3367  Located eight miles east of Flagstaff, take Interstate 40 east to exit 204. Established in 1915, Walnut Canyon has 700 year old ruins from Native Americans that used to live in the area. Located at the Monument has several hiking trails, displays and interpretive talks. This is a half to full day trip.

Wupatki National Monument – (928) 526-3367  Take US 89 north from Flagstaff for either 14 or 28 miles. Both exits of the highway are clearly signed. Established in 1924 Wupatki has ancient dwellings that date back around 800 years. This was the largest pueblo found in the area. While visiting the Monument you can attend interpretive hikes and talks or drive to different points of interest. This is a half to full day trip that can be linked with Sunset Crater National Monument.
